At Boroondara Park Primary School, our teaching and learning program is based upon The Victorian Curriculum F-10 Version 2.0. The Victorian Curriculum sets out the essential knowledge and skills every student needs during their years of schooling. This curriculum helps prepare students to become lifelong learners, confident individuals, and active, informed citizens—ready to thrive in a diverse and changing world.
We are dedicated to equipping students for success in the 21st century. In our classrooms, students take ownership of their work, set personal learning goals, receive feedback on both their efforts and achievements, and are challenged to grow each day.
Our curriculum is designed with the learner in mind. We consider how students learn best, what engages them, and how to support their progress.
Lessons and learning experiences are planned to be relevant, accessible, and challenging for all learners. We support both academic growth and the development of important life skills.
We have a balanced approach to teaching, with an instructional model that ensures a consistent planning process with standardised documentation. We provide contemporary learning experiences, delivering a broad, challenging and inclusive curriculum.
Differentiation is at the heart of our practice, as we acknowledge that every learner is unique. It involves adjusting teaching environments and practices to provide diverse learning experiences that meet the needs of each student.
Literacy
At Boroondara Park Primary School, we take a balanced approach to teaching Literacy.
Our program includes all key areas of English:
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking and Listening
We support students’ literacy development through rich, engaging learning experiences that often connect with our Integrated Inquiry units. These cross-curricular units offer students meaningful opportunities to utilise and apply their literacy skills in real-world and relevant contexts.
At the heart of our program is a strong focus on:
- High-quality literature
- Authentic learning experiences
- Explicit teaching of skills, including spelling and phonics.

Numeracy
At Boroondara Park Primary School, we use a balanced and well-rounded approach to teaching Mathematics.
Our program is designed to build students’ skills and confidence by focusing on four key areas of learning, called proficiencies:
- Understanding
- Fluency
- Reasoning
- Problem-solving
These proficiencies are taught across all six areas of the maths curriculum: Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics, and Probability. Our goal is to help students apply their mathematical knowledge to both familiar and unfamiliar situations. We want them to solve problems efficiently, make informed decisions, and confidently explain and check their thinking.
A strong foundation in maths begins in the early years. As students progress through the school, they continue to build on these skills, enabling them to approach more complex problems with confidence.

Integrated Studies
This approach encourages our children to:
- Understand their world by posing questions, gathering information and communicating ideas
- Work cooperatively with others to develop skills of listening, teamwork, empathy and collaboration
- Develop life-long dispositions for intelligent, creative and reflective thinking
- Develop a social conscience that enables them to take responsibility for their actions.
Our units are based on the following concepts: Identity, Sustainability, Social Justice, Creativity, Community, Perspective, Discovery, and Place.
Using an inquiry approach, our teaching teams deliver an Integrated Curriculum that provides opportunities for our children.
Learning Assets
The learner assets encourage students to be researchers, thinkers, collaborators, self-managers and communicators across all areas of learning.
A framework of Learner Assets:
- I can think logically, creatively, empathetically and reflectively.
- I can research/investigate in many different ways.
- I can communicate effectively with others.
- I can collaborate with others and work effectively in a team.
- I can manage my own learning and behaviour and work independently.

One of the aims of BPPS is to prepare students for lifelong learning in the 21st Century. In preparing students to be active citizens, we must therefore do more than provide them with information. Knowledge alone is not enough; they also need the skills and dispositions to transfer this knowledge across learning domains and into the future. Teaching and Learning are therefore focused on both content AND process – meaning that students learn “the WHAT” together with “the HOW“.
Following the Kath Murdoch learner assets, students are explicitly taught the skills and dispositions for lifelong learning. The learner assets outline the most important qualities and skills that good learners need to develop and enhance their learning.
