Whole-School Sustainability
At Boroondara Park Primary School, sustainability is more than just a subject—it’s a way of life embedded into the daily experiences of our students, staff, and broader community. Our school is deeply committed to nurturing environmentally conscious citizens who understand the importance of protecting and preserving our planet for future generations.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
We are proud to be an active participant in the ResourceSmart Schools program, an award-winning Victorian Government initiative that supports schools in embedding sustainability across all areas of operation and learning.
Through this program, our students and staff work collaboratively to reduce waste, save energy and water, promote biodiversity, and minimise our ecological footprint. School-wide, we strive to minimise our ecological footprint by implementing sustainable practices into our daily operations.
We achieve this by integrating sustainability initiatives into all areas of the curriculum and instilling a sense of ownership of and pride in improving the environment.
We lead by example, demonstrating exemplary practices in waste management, water and energy usage, and continue to develop the school grounds to enhance biodiversity.
Student Leadership and Engagement
A core feature of sustainability at BPPS is the involvement of students as environmental leaders. Our Keen Green Team (KGT) was first established by students in 2018 after concluding that, for every sustainable and non-sustainable action, there is a reaction somewhere on the planet. KGT plays a pivotal role in driving sustainability projects and raising awareness within the school community.
From monitoring recycling practices to initiating school-wide campaigns, KGT ensures every voice is heard and that our sustainability efforts are student-driven and meaningful.

The Aim of KGT
KGT’s aim is to focus on the essential question:
- How will sustainable environmental practices, led by the group, impact the lives of future generations at BPPS?
The Purpose of KGT
To provide students with authentic and meaningful opportunities to engage with the environment and, in doing so, learn to understand and respect the environment of BPPS and the wider world.
KGT began due to the high level of interest in all areas related to environmental sustainability and the desire for change.
The team is comprised of our two Year 6 Environmental Pillar Leaders, as well as all Grade 5 students who participate in KGT classes for eight weeks of each term. This allows students to take ownership of an area and to fully appreciate aspects of the environment, such as seasonal change.
The Focus of KGT
To strategically plan for and implement quality learning spaces, experiences and programs that allow students the opportunity to better appreciate the natural world. The aim of the Environment Team is to actively participate in setting yearly goals within five key areas: Biodiversity, Energy, Waste, Water, and Curriculum.
Whole-School Initiatives
BPPS has implemented several initiatives to create a more sustainable learning environment, including:
- Waste Reduction Programs: We promote rubbish-free lunches, operate comprehensive recycling systems, and encourage composting of food scraps from classrooms and the canteen.
- Energy Conservation: The school community is proactive in minimising energy consumption by using energy-efficient lighting, switching off appliances when not in use, and integrating sustainability messages into classroom practices.
- Water-Saving Measures: BPPS is committed to conserving water through initiatives such as installing water-saving devices and educating students on responsible water use.
- Biodiversity Projects: Our school grounds feature native gardens and habitats designed to attract local wildlife, offering students valuable outdoor learning experiences that foster respect for biodiversity and ecosystems.
Sustainability in Learning
Sustainability is woven into the BPPS curriculum across all year levels. Students explore topics such as climate change, conservation, waste management, and sustainable living through engaging classroom activities and hands-on learning.
By connecting sustainability education with real-world actions, BPPS ensures that students understand their vital role as global citizens and environmental stewards.
Community Involvement
BPPS values the support and involvement of families and the broader community in achieving sustainability goals.
Parents and local organisations are invited to participate in school initiatives, working alongside students and staff to make meaningful contributions to a greener future. This strong sense of community partnership amplifies the impact of BPPS’s sustainability efforts both within and beyond the school gates.
