At Boroondara Park Primary School, environmental stewardship is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy. We are committed to cultivating a culture of sustainability, empowering students to become proactive guardians of the environment through hands-on learning and community engagement.
Our Commitment to the Environment
BPPS recognises the intrinsic value of the environment in enhancing the quality of life for our students and the broader community.
Our comprehensive Environment Policy outlines our objectives to minimise waste, conserve energy and water, enhance biodiversity, and promote sustainable practices across all school operations.
This policy serves as a guiding framework for our environmental initiatives and is regularly reviewed to ensure its effectiveness and relevance.
Student-Led Environmental Leadership: The Keen Green Team (KGT)
Central to our environmental efforts is the Keen Green Team (KGT), a student-initiated group comprising Year 5 students and two Year 6 Environmental Pillar Leaders.
The KGT plays a pivotal role in planning and implementing sustainability projects, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among students. Their activities include:
- Conducting waste audits and promoting waste reduction strategies.
- Managing composting programs and encouraging “Nude Food” lunches.
- Participating in biodiversity projects, such as creating a Bug Hotel and maintaining habitat gardens.
Waste Management and Reduction
BPPS is committed to minimising waste through the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle. Our initiatives include:
- Encouraging rubbish-free lunches and the practice of taking non-compostable litter home.
- Implementing in-house recycling programs for paper, plastics, and electronic waste.
- Regularly measuring waste outputs to monitor progress towards our target of 0.3m³ of landfill per student per year.
- Educating students on effective waste management through classroom activities and assemblies.
Every Thursday, the 'Waste and Create' group from KGT, collect and empty the compost and recycling bins in our school. Our group have noticed that our school has improved a lot with separating recycling, compost and normal waste. We are also more careful with using paper, resulting in less recycling waste. In the last few weeks all our recycling fit in the wheely bins and we haven't needed the paper container emptied. This is not only good for the environment, it is saving our school money! Keep up the good work everyone!!
Energy Conservation Efforts
Our school actively pursues energy efficiency by:
- Transitioning to LED lighting across the school.
- Participating in programs like Earth Hour and National Ride2School Day to promote energy awareness.
- Monitoring energy consumption data to identify areas for improvement.
- Celebrating energy-saving achievements through newsletters and school-wide recognition programs.
Enhancing Biodiversity
BPPS has undertaken numerous projects to promote biodiversity within the school grounds, including:
- Establishing habitat gardens and a dry river bed garden to support local wildlife.
- Planting indigenous species to create a wildlife corridor linking Koonung Creek to the school.
- Developing outdoor learning spaces, such as the Peace Place Garden and amphitheatre garden.
- Maintaining a kitchen garden with edible plants, fostering an appreciation for sustainable food practices.
Water Conservation Initiatives
Our water-saving strategies encompass:
- Installing water tanks for toilet flushing and garden irrigation.
- Implementing the “Water – Learn It, Live It” program in partnership with our local water authority.
- Regular maintenance of plumbing systems to prevent leaks and water wastage.
- Educating the school community on the importance of water conservation through curriculum integration and practical activities.
Integrating Sustainability into the Curriculum
Sustainability is embedded in our curriculum as an inquiry focus across all year levels every second year. Students engage in projects that:
- Address real-world environmental issues.
- Encourage critical thinking and problem-solving.
- Promote student agency and leadership in sustainability efforts.
- Connect classroom learning with practical applications in the school and wider community.
Celebrating a Decade of Sustainability
Over the past ten years, BPPS has achieved significant milestones in its environmental sustainability journey, including:
- Constructing a dry river bed garden to address flooding issues, enhancing both functionality and biodiversity.
- Collaborating with families, teachers, and students to implement environmentally friendly solutions.
- Continuously evolving our practices to meet the changing needs of our environment and community.
