in all Students
At Boroondara Park Primary School (BPPS), we are committed to nurturing the talents of all students, providing them with opportunities to strive for excellence, achieve success, and develop to their full potential. We aim to do this in our classroom programs, which are designed to cater for the individual needs of all students through the differentiation of lessons in the core subjects of English and mathematics.
For students working well above their expected level, our enrichment programs are designed to challenge, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and a passion for learning.
Student Excellence Mathematics Extension Program
Targeting students in Years 3 to 6 who demonstrate exceptional aptitude in mathematics, our mathematics extension program offers advanced learning opportunities aligned with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0.
The scope of this program is to provide enhancement opportunities for high-achieving students who display advanced abilities in the curriculum strands of mathematics (including number, algebra, measurement, shape, statistics and probability), as well as aptitude, lateral thinking, and perseverance in relation to problem-solving.
Boroondara Park Primary School has a high-achieving student mathematical demographic, and as such, in line with the aims and objectives of our Annual Implementation Plan, we aim to fully extend and support the progress of these students.
The mathematics extension program supports both the work of our differentiated classroom mathematics programs and the Tutor Learning Initiative, enabling us to ensure that all our students are consistently met at their academic point of need.
Participants engage in:
- In-depth exploration of numbers, algebra, measurement, shape, statistics and probability,
- Problem-solving tasks that encourage lateral thinking and perseverance, and
- Participation in mathematical challenges and competitions across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP)
In collaboration with the Department of Education, BPPS offers the VHAP to selected students in Years 5 and 6. This 10-week online program, delivered by Virtual School Victoria, focuses on:
- Enhancing skills in English or Mathematics,
- Developing higher-order thinking and problem-solving abilities, and
- Fostering independent learning and collaboration with like-minded peers.
Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series
BPPS students have the opportunity to participate in this state-wide initiative, which offers:
- High-quality extension activities across various disciplines,
- Programs are delivered by universities, tech schools, and specialist centres, and
- Experiences designed to ignite curiosity and uncover individual talents.
ICAS Competitions
We encourage students in Years 3 to 6 to participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS), which assess abilities in:
- English,
- Mathematics,
- Science, and
- Digital Technologies.
These assessments challenge students to apply classroom learning to new contexts, promoting higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills.
Writing Competitions
Students with a passion for writing are encouraged to enter external competitions, providing opportunities to:
- Showcase their creativity and writing skills,
- Receive recognition for their work, and
- Have their writing published, fostering confidence and a sense of achievement.
