Speaking and Listening

Growing Confident Voices: Building Powerful Speaking and Listening Skills

At Boroondara Park Primary School, we believe strong communication skills are the key to success in learning and life. Our Speaking and Listening program nurtures students into confident speakers and attentive listeners, equipping them to express themselves clearly, connect with others, and thrive in any situation.

Speaking

Our Speaking and Listening program helps students become confident communicators by developing both their speaking and listening skills. Students participate in a range of speaking activities throughout their school years.

In the early years, they begin with class discussions and both formal and informal presentations. As they progress from Years 3 to 6, they build on these skills by participating in debates and performing monologues.

These activities help students learn to express their ideas clearly, speak with confidence, and adapt their communication style to suit the audience or situation.

Listening

Listening is equally important. Students regularly work in pairs and small groups, take part in reading groups and book clubs, and contribute to class discussions. These opportunities enable them to practice active listening, understand diverse perspectives, and respond thoughtfully to others.

Listening skills are also developed through following instructions, participating in debates, and reflecting on the ideas shared by their peers.

Together, these experiences help students become thoughtful speakers and respectful listeners—skills that are essential in school and in life.
